Can anyone tell me about my Grandad’s Old Town Canoe serial 174666 16. My friend is going to refurbish it.

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 174666 is a 16 foot long Otca model with a narrow two and 3/4 inch planking and a keel. It was built between March and July, 1965. The original exterior paint color was white. It shipped on July 30th, 1965 to Bluefield, West Virginia. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Canoes with a family connection are always extra special. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the project,

Benson

Thank you Benson for the information! I relayed it to my Mom and she thinks this may be when a new canvas was shipped to their family to re surface the canoe. She graduated high school in 1964 and remembers picking the canoe up from the old town Maine store when she was in 3rd or 4th grade with her Dad.

This may have replaced a canoe that your mother picked up at the factory in the 1950s but I would need another serial number to find the original canoe. Sorry,

Benson
