Old Town build record 125278 16

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Some help finding this record would be appreciated. It almost looks like the first digit is a "T", not a "1", but I've never seen that before. The boat is a rowing canoe, one of a pair at Alford Lake Camp in Hope, Maine. These haven't been used for years but the campers still use the war canoe!

Thanks for your help,

Bruce Malone

Fits to a "T"

Hello Bruce,

Old Town 125278 is a 16 foot CS (common sense) grade double ended boat, finished between June 1938 and September 1939. It has open spruce gunwales, ash decks, spruce seats, a keel, and outside stems. It was originally painted dark green and shipped Alford Lake Camp in Union, Maine, on July 8, 1940. It was returned for unspecified repairs on December 15, 1954.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

Glad the kids still enjoy the war canoe!

Kathy
