Old Town 17171?

Unrepentant Canoeist
A friend of a friend (really! It's not me!) has OT 17171, wondering about the build record; should be a 16 footer. Can we get that, please?

Also, having replaced the gunnels (which were not originals), we're wondering where exactly the seats & thwarts would be located, and how high the seats should be, off the floor.

Thank you!

The Old Town canoe with serial number 17171 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Charles River model with red Western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and three cane seat backs. It was built between March and May, 1911. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on May 23rd, 1911 to Chicago, Illinois. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. I have a similar one from a few years earlier as shown at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?12320 that I can measure for you at home this evening if no one else responds sooner. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
