Old Town 142307 16

Hello Malcolm--

Old Town 142307 is a 16 foot CS (common sense, or middle) grade HW model canoe that was finished June-September of 1945. It has open spruce gunwales, ash decks, thwarts, and seat frames, and a keel. Originally, the upper portion was painted dark green and the lower part, guide special green. The canoe was shipped to Stubbs Hardware Company on October 26, 1945. The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Old Town 142307

Many thanks: Stubbs Hardware, where 142307 was shipped in 1945, once existed on Congress St. in Savannah, where the canoe was purchased by my parents about ten years later. It was a bit banged up (tidal waters are not ideal for wooden canoes) and I recanvased it in 1959. That year it made a two-week trip down the Savannah River with an aluminum companion, from the confluence of the Seneca and Tugaloo, but hasn't been much used since then. It's now due for some attention. I'm really pleased to have the information.

It's fun when the build record adds to the canoe's history--- fills in some blank spots, or maybe just makes sense so that you know it's the right one!

I'll attach information on the HW model from the 1945 catalog, courtesy "The Complete Old Town Canoe Company Catalog Collection, 1901- 1993", available on CD from http://www.wcha.org/catalog/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.
