Hi Steve,
Old Town 137486 is a 16 foot CS grade Yankee model canoe finished April-September of 1943. The wood species used in trimming isn't specified, but the gunwales are open spruce and the canoe has a keel. It was originally guide special green. It was shipped to the Crandell-Hicks Company of Boston, MA, on September 23, 1943. There's an interesting notation that "filler cracked because of too long exposure on roof." Also, near the canoe's serial number, is the notation "second". Benson may know the significance of that.

The article at http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=9798&d=1266775985 has several pictures showing canoes stacked on the roof of the factory while the filler dried. It appears that this caused the filler to crack occasionally. The build record below and the one Kathy posted previously document this. The "second" notation means that the canoe has a cosmetic flaw so the price will be slightly less than a "first" quality one. Better late than never?

Thanks for the further information, Benson. One has to wonder what the factory did to repair the cracked filler - or did they just sell it as a second? At any rate, the project is complete and the owner is happy with her. The brass stem bands on the glossy black paint make for a stunning look.

I don't know what was done for a repair like this but I suspect that sanding and additional filler was involved. Completely successful repairs would probably be sold as usual and the less successful ones would be sold as seconds. The two build records here show both results.
