Looking for info on Old Town #133821 that I purchased in 1964. It has not been used in the last 10 years and needs new canvas.

Hello--

Old Town 133821 is a 16 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade Yankee model canoe. It has open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seat frames and a keel. Originally it was dark green.

You can find interesting information on the Yankee by using the "search" function (above). One thing I like about looking up these records is when something turns up that's historically interesting. Your canoe was finished from October 1941 to March of 1942, during which time the U.S. got into WWII. This was possibly a livery canoe, because it was shipped to the Whalom Park Amusement Company on June 2, 1942. The folks who originally paddled this canoe may have been trying to have some fun during war-time, after making it trough the depression.

The scan of this record is posted below--- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Kathy

old postcard

In addition to the link above, with information on Whalom Park, I notice there are many old postcards on eBay which could shed light on where this canoe has been.
