Old Town 11972-17

Should be a sponson canoe. Thank you very much.

The Old Town with serial number 11972 is 15 feet long without sponsons and the Carleton with that number is 16 feet long with sponsons so those aren't a good match. The Kennebec canoe with this serial number is shown on pages 520 and 521 of volume two in the Kennebec ledgers. This was assigned to a 17 foot long Kennebec model, type a with sponsons. It was planked by Mansell on March 5th, 1917. Roy canvased it and applied the first filler coat on the same day. The sponsons were installed by Doucette on March 8th, 1917. The second filler coat was applied on June 15th, 1917. Morrissette railed it on June 19th, 1917. It was painted blue on July 7th, 1917. It was shipped to Chamberlain on July 13th, 1917. This was probably dealer but we don't currently have enough information to identify it.

The scans of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) as you probably know well. I hope that you will renew your membership or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

More information about this and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CDs available from the WCHA store at http://store.wcha.org/The-Historic-...pany-Catalog-Collection-Version-2-CD-ROM.html on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration.

Thank you, Benson. I will have to coax the number out. It was difficult to read. The canoe does look like an Old Town, although maybe has a serial number on the bow stem only. I will take another look.

Pictures could help if you want some additional opinions. It could be 119725 if it has any signs of having been a sailing canoe.

That is a possibility, but the rails are mahogany, and the mast seat does not match the trim. It is ash and the trim oak. Bill Clements may have replaced the outwales when he restored the canoe last time. I will check the number. Thanks again.

I do believe that 119725 is the right number. It is a sailing canoe and the location fits too.

Thanks again.
