Need Identification Help...

This old canoe has been in the family for a few generations. My wife and I are moving and we don't have a home for it. We live in Michigan. We are hoping to get some feedback on what it is and approximate age before putting it up for sale. It is not seaworthy yet makes a good display. The Serial # is 33315. It had a deteriorated cloth canvas over the gunnels and on the exterior when we rescued it about 25 years ago from my wife's grandparents barn. I have the 2 cross braces as well as some of the green colored floor slats that ran lengthwise on the canoe floor. Any help would be greatly appreciated on it's identification. We are hoping it goes to a good new home.

Welcome and congratulations, my guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 33315. This is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between July, 1914 and January, 1915. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on February, 4th, 1915 to Detroit, Michigan. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. A listing at https://www.woodencanoe.org/classifieds can be one of the fastest ways to find a good new home for a canoe like this and the page at https://www.woodencanoe.org/ad-instructions explains the process. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the sale,

Benson

Welcome aboard!
Wooden canoes, or any wood boat that doesn't float, can be hard to sell. When I want to price something, I check local classifieds for similar items and try to compete with the lowest price. Ignore the high prices that have been listed for a long time. If you get only one offer, take it. I hope you find a new home for that canoe.
