Kennebeck Outwales

Paul Miller

Canoe Nut
Hi,

I have seen the "D" shaped outwales on a Kennebeck nailed from the inside out but not from the outside in. They nailed the outwale on all the way to the tip of the bow and stern, no screws.

It does appear to be factory done, has anyone else seen this?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,
KENNEBEC had no regard for the man who had to remove the outwales....heck, let alone re-create tapering "D" outwales.
I've seen them nailed from the inwale and from the the outwale on every other rib...on the same canoe.
Restorers nightmare....
Bert Morris had no regard for the man who had to repair/replace inwales and stems...
It also appears that Bert was staunchly opposed to open gunwales (for which I understand he charged extra), which make a lot of sense from a drainage perspective, and ease in removal for new canvas.

Thanks Guys,

I'd hate to have the one you worked on Dave. Those had to be very difficult to remove.

I like the look of having them nailed from the inside out and will do it that way.

Seems like they let guys do their own thing.

Happy paddling,

Paul
