Kennebec 17 ft

Canoeist/Guitarist
I have a 17 foot kennebec canoe that my dad bought in the 60's that is the nicest canoe I have ever paddled. I'm a flatwater guy, (mostly ), and it has a nice flat bottom and is stable and tracks well. The serial number is 20046. Is this where I post to get info on how old it is, model, etc?
Thanks,
David

The Kennebec canoe with serial number 20046 is shown on pages 124 and 125 of volume four in the Kennebec ledgers. This was assigned to a 17 foot long Kennebec Model, type A. It was planked by Morgan on January 2nd, 1929. The canvas covering was applied by Soucier on the January 24th, 1929 and the first filler coat was applied by Giroux on the same day. The second filler coat was also applied by Giroux on January 30th, 1927. It was railed by H. Shuler on February 6th, 1929. The "F 22" (Function number 22 or the keel?) was also completed by Clark on February 9th, 1929. The "F 24", "F 25", "F 28" and "F35" (Functions number 24, 25, 28, and 35 which may be the braces/thwarts, seats, and painting?) were completed by "O" on April 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th respectively in 1929. The original paint color was green. It was also packed by Murry on April 17th, 1929. The shipping date was June 24th, 1929 to location "29-710". This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it. The original Kennebec records are stored at the Maine State Museum. I am unable to attach a scan of these records since their policies do not permit any electronic reproduction of their materials.

The microfilms of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

More information about this and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CDs available from http://www.wcha.org/catalog/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
