Hi Andy,

Old Town 19642 is an 18 foot Guide Special grade IF model canoe finished from November 1911 to February 1912. it has red Western cedar planking, CLOSED spruce gunwales, maple decks, thwarts, and seat frames and was originally painted New Haven Green. It was shipped to Binghamton, NY, on February 23, 1912. There is no mention on this build record of sail rigging, but many sailing canoes were fitted for sailing after-market, sometimes by the dealership to which the canoe was sent and sometimes by the owner, many years after receiving the canoe.

Please double-check the serial number on both stems of your canoe. While the location the canoe was shipped to might appear to fit, some of the other details do not--- although the canoe has been worked on and many changes could have happened in a canoe over a hundred years old. One deck appears old, while the other seems a newer replacement. The mast seat appears newer. Your canoe has open gunwales, but sometimes closed wale canoes are converted to open wale when rotting rib-tips are removed. I'll post the build record, but check the serial number and details and we can keep looking if this record doesn't appear right.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available athttp://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I just noticed the number is clearer on the aft end and is 19647
Sorry about that.
Could you update my build sheet info.

Much appreciated

Hello again. Old Town 19647 is a 15 foot CS (common sense, or middle) grade HW model canoe that was completed December 1911-March 1912. It has Western cedar planking, CLOSED spruce gunwales, ash decks, thwarts, and seat frames and a keel. Original color was dark green. It was shipped to Folsom Arms in NYC on March 15, 1912. Please measure your canoe to confirm that it is 15 feet long, or check to see if there is a length tamped into the wood either before or after the serial number. It is uncommon for OT canoes not to have the length on the stem along with the serial number. To accurately measure a canoe, imagine a stick pushed into the ground at each end of the canoe that just touches the outermost point of the canoe, and measure between these two points (those who measure a canoe tip-to-tip won't be measuring the full length, and those who draw a tape along the canoe's side will end up with a larger measurement). Folsom Arms commonly placed a metal plate bearing their name on the bow deck of canoes they handled, so check for this (or a circular area where the plate might have been).

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

Neither of these build records seem to match. Can you provide some pictures of the entire area around the serial numbers on the stems from each end? The tips at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help if some of the digits aren't clear. What is the overall extreme length of the canoe in a straight line? More pictures of the bow deck area, the interior, and a few overall shots could help too. This could speed up the identification process considerably. Thanks,

Benson
