This kind of serial number is newer and is a national standard. More info at:
At the same site, the boat manufacturer report shows XTC as Old Town Canoe under Johnson Outdoors.
And the last 4 digits show it is a 1988 model but was made in October 1987.
Hope this helps!

Worth Gretter has given you the information that is available. This Old Town has serial number 298853 but the scanned records stop shortly after 250000 so we don't have any additional information available to share. The page at https://www.usps.org/national/safety/HIN/HIN.pdf has similar details. Post some more pictures and dimensions if you want help determining the model. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Better late than never? I stopped by the factory this week and had a chance to look up some records. The Old Town canoe with serial number 299853 and hull identification number XTC98853J788 is a 16 foot long fiberglass Canadienne model with wood rails. It was built in October, 1987. The original exterior gelcoat color was maroon. It shipped on December 4th, 1987 to Concord, Massachusetts. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join, or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck,

Benson
