Canoe of Unknown Origin...

Without seeing pictures, my guess is you may have a Penn Yan Owasco. The first "8" may actually be an "S"... in which case the s/n would read:
ONS 48 365
That serial number would indicate an Owasco model in spruce (the "S")
built in 1948... possibly the 365th one that year.
There's been some discussion of late re Penn Yan. If you go to "search" above and plug in "Penn Yan", you may find added information... maybe some pictures... try plugging "Owasco" into the search. If this doesn't fit your canoe, post some pictures and many minds may sort it out!
