Curious about Wooden Canoes
wife and i recently purchased a nutting 16 ft. short deck canoe. its hull number is 3324 . we have found a small brass tag stuck (face against) the inner stem in the bottom of our boat. we have also found 2 corresponding screw holes immediately above where we found the tag , which is just aft of the fore deck on the left inner gunwale. it is 1 and 1/2 inches long by 1/2 inch tall . the plate has 324 on it. i have my guesses as to what it is but would gladly hear anyones thought. as any one probably knows more about canoes than i . we have been restoring american and canadian runabouts for years but this is only our second canoe. thanks in advance for any ones speculation. tom lange , lange boats , boulder , co.

My guess would be a livery tag. Nutting and many of the other Charles River builders ran large canoe rental fleets as you probably know. This is probably one of the tags that was used to track one of their rental canoes.
