Barnfind Old Town Lapstrake Runabout - Serial Number Request 173273

Floodtide

Lastrake 16
Looking for information about this boat. I am new to wood boat restoration but have restored many cars and other items I was told 1950 but think it's more 1960 something based on other #s in this thread. Got to my photo album for some pics.

The Old Town build record for serial number 173273 shows a 16 foot long lapstrake outboard model boat with a deck, a floor rack, and board seats. It was built in between September and December, 1963. The original exterior color was white. It shipped on April 20th, 1965 to Newbury, Massachusetts.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your boat. More information is available from http://store.wcha.org/The-Complete-Old-Town-Canoe-Company-Catalog-Collection-CD-ROM.html in the catalog collection. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

any idea what the value of this boat is? How rare?

The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 has a good summary of how to value an old canoe and some of that information will apply to this boat. However, old boats are different. Another vintage canvas covered boat is listed at http://www.ebay.com/itm/131841404000 now for $1500 but has no bids. A similar question came up recently at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?14126 so they may have some ideas. I commonly see lapstrakes like yours listed with asking prices ranging from a several hundred to a few thousand dollars. The 16 foot version of this boat is fairly rare since it was only made for a few years as shown in Dan Miller's diagram below from the scanned catalog collection. The longer and shorter versions are more common. Good luck,

Benson
