We got back from Ohio with our restored 1917 Old Town Carleton a few weeks ago. It is beautiful and knowing we were planning to take it to the Assembly soon we thought we better get our paddles wet. So, we headed out late yesterday afternoon for our familiar lake: Alligator Lake. We had the whole lake to ourselves as it has been raining every day this week. With 60% chance for rain we decided to go for it as it was sunny and we were ready to take our chances. It turned out perfect with no rain and just quiet and tranquil moments. We went down a waterway that had really grew in to an overgrown jungle. We came upon what we thought was the end with trees and debris across our path. But, Macky said let's see about getting around and through it. So, that was one time and lo and behold it worked. Then up ahead another blocked entry. But, once again we trudged ahead and made it through. But, the third one stopped us as it was a giant tree and there was no way to get around it. So, we turned around and headed back to the open waters of the lake. But, before we got to the lake there is one area with banana trees. One of the trees was huge with a big bunch just hanging out! Actually, we saw the same banana tree last year with bananas and thought of Mike Ormsby coming down to paddle. So, we are still saving them for Mike to get out and cut it down. Maybe he will make it down sometime to play Tarzan. So, coming out to the open waters we headed to the rookery. It is amazing to see so many species of birds and some were fighting. Gosh, cool your jets guys....it's only a canoe; we come in peace! We took a turn to head to a beautiful cove that has a walking trail with lots of native wildflowers and another birding area with a small pond. There is a large dead tree there loaded with all kinds of birds, too. We just missed the Roseate Spoonbills rich in their pink plumage as they got spooked and flew away right in front of us. But, we did enjoy the flowers, the other birds, and decided to take some still shots of the canoe in the evening sunlight. I think the Old Town is going to love being at the Assembly and we are looking forward to seeing everyone again. Til then be safe and take good care.
