92887-17

You may want to take another look at your numbers if you have a 17 foot long canoe. The Old Town with serial number 92887 was a nine foot long dinghy that went to San Francisco, Calif. on March 2nd, 1927. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help. Please attach a picture of the numbers from each end if you can or just confirm the length and which digit is the least clear. Thanks,

Benson

Actual serial # is 92287 (pardon my typo). Will try to upload a photo or two.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 92287 is a 17 foot long, CS grade, Otca model with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch decks, birch thwarts, and a keel. It was built between September, 1926 and May, 1927. The original exterior paint color was bright red with a two inch white stripe and turned down ends. It shipped on June 2nd, 1927 to Laurence, Mass. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson

Awesome! Looks like the right one. My husband remembers it being red when he first saw it back in the 50's. Thanks so much for the information!canoeserial.jpgcanoe1.jpg
