I recently purchased an older Old Town (not sure of the model), and I was interested in finding out some information on it before I begin work on restoring it. The seriel # is 17 77208

Sounds like you have a nice canoe to work on! Old Town 77208 is a 17 foot AA grade Otca, with Western red cedar planking, open wales, 20" mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts and seats, which was fitted with a floor rack. Chicken-scratchy markings on the record indicate that outside stems, a keel, and sponsons may also have been part of your canoe's original appearance... any of that still there?

This canoe was painted red-- dark? ummm... once again, the chicken scratches... and a 2" black and white border stripe was added with a design the original owner sketched (any indication of that?).

The canoe was shipped December 11, 1923 to Edward K. Tryon Co. in Philadelphia, PA.

If this doesn't seem to match your canoe, we can try again. I'll attach the build record below, and if you need a larger size scan, let me know.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details.

Thank you for the prompt response. This does seem like the same boat, as it is WRC planking, with open wales, mahogany decks, thwarts and seats (one will need to get re-done but both are in pretty nice shape). It also has a keel, and outside stem that appears to be sealed and painted over. The color is no longer red (it has been painted forrest green), and there does not seem to be any sign of a floor rack or sponsons.

All in all, this canoe is still in very good condition. If it is not a hassel I would love to see the larger copy of the build record. I will also post some pictures soon, as I would like some input on the extent to which I should with restorations. I would also love to see the original look of this canoe. The paint job seems interesting/more custom than usual.

If you can PM or email me your email address, I'll attach a larger scan. (My dial-up connection limits the size of images I post, because I sometimes get disconnected before it's done materializing!)

Floor racks and sponsons are items that frequently disappear over the years. Sounds like your canoe is in great shape, especially considering its age.

Folks here enjoy pictures... before, during, and the final product!
