Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hi I have a partially restored Old Town # 177760. I'd love any further info! Thanks, Shirley Also, this canoe needs a new home, its been living under my house with its new canvas and stripped interior for too long! Shirley

You may want to take another look at the serial numbers in each end of your canoe if it has canvas since the Old Town with number 177760 is a fiberglass FG model as shown below. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help if you are not sure where to look. Please post your results here and someone can probably get you the correct build record. Thanks,

Benson

Hi Benson, Thanks, I think the number must be 77760 because it seems more likely. Here are some pics of the canoe and the serial numberIMG_0707.jpgIMG_0715.jpgIMG_0720.jpgIMG_0721.jpg

New images of bow stem of 1760/ 7760/ 17760/ 0911???

The Continuing saga of 77760: Please take a look at the photos of the Bow stem. I can't figure out what it says..

My guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 111160 if it is 16 feet long. This is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Yankee model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, oak decks, half ribs, a keel, and outside stems. It was built between February and April, 1932. The original exterior paint color was orange. It shipped on April 18th, 1932 to Lake George, New York.

A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

Please reply here if you have any other questions.

Hi Benson, Thanks for your efforts! The canoe was red when I got it so this could be it. It would be interesting to see how Old Town stamped the numbers, and if my numbers are all ones instead of sevens or some sevens and some ones. I'm going to send another picture of a wood and canvas canoe at Long Point Vermont which my neighbor has filled with dirt and plants! Shame...
