Greetings! We inherited the above canoe. Anyone know anything about it or if anyone is interested? It has been hanging in a covered porch for 20 years. We just took it down and it is surprisingly in really good shape.

Welcome and congratulations, the Kennebec canoe with serial number 14579 is a 17 foot long Torpedo type a shown on page 232 of volume two in the Kennebec ledgers. It was planked by Lantigne on August 18th, 1920. The canvas covering was applied by Roy on October 2nd, 1920. He also added the first filler coat on October 20th, 1920. Tuttle added the second filler coat on June 28th, 1924. Ames railed it on the same day and added outside stems. The original color was red. It was shipped to location 24-557 on July 1st, 1924. This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it. The scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). A description of the project to preserve other records like these is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

More information about this and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection available from http://www.wcha.org/store/historic-wood-canoe-and-boat-company-catalog-collection in the WCHA store.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. The classifieds here at http://www.wcha.org/classifieds are usually one of the fastest ways to find a good new home for a canoe like this. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Wow Benson. I didn't expect a reply so soon; and this is great information! Is it weird to have 4 years go by before it was finished? Just curious. Were they made of cedar or a different material?

Thank you!!!!
