Last weekend I paddled a 1948 White canoe on the wild & scenic Lumber River in eastern North Carolina. While running shuttle at the end of this 3 day trip, on rt1403, a few miles south of Wagram, we passed Cypress Bend Vineyards, which necessitated a stop for tasting, and a purchase of a few bottles for Thanksgiving.

There really is a spot named Cypress Bend on the Lumber, and many bald cypress trees grow along the river. Inside the vineyard store they have the hull of a 1920's vintage Old Town canoe up high as a decoration. And on their label is the outline of a canoe. So if you find yourself driving nearby Wagram, NC, stop by and have a look, and a sip, for yourself. Tom McCloud
