View Full Version : Outwale mounting?

I have just aquired what appears to be a 16' Chestnut prospector. Unfortunately it is in tough condition and there are no I.D. markings visible. What I find most peculiar is the outwale mounting which is done by screws through the inwales into the outwales. The only external outwale screws are near the ends at the decks. Was this a factory way of mounting outwales which I had not previously encountered? If so, by Chestnut or some other manufacturers?

Dave,
I can't help you as to your Chestnut, but I have an OT Guide that has "oval" outer rails that are attached with screws from the inside, and they/it is listed on the build record.

B.N.Morris has outwales mounted with screws through the inwales.

Dave,
I have a "Pal" and the outer wale is secured from the outside. I looked at a Chestnut catalog and pictures...all indicate from the outside in. Maybe yours was restored at some time and they did the reverse as a matter of personal taste...or it was ordered from the factory that way but doesn't sound logical.
