Curious about Wooden Canoes
Does anyone know when (what year, approximately) Peterborough stopped merging their canoes' outside stems into the hull, and began scarfing them to the keel? There are plenty of photos here on the forums showing what appear to be earlier canoes in which the outside stem merges with the hull such that if there were no keel, the outside stem and the canoe's bottom is smooth. The outside stem is sort of inserted into the hull. But in what appear to be later canoes, the stem is wholly outside the hull and mates with the keel with a scarf.
