Serial Number Search

Hello George,

Old Town 136971 is a 17 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade Otca model canoe, completed January to June of 1943, with open spruce gunwales, oak decks/thwarts/seat frames, a keel and a floor rack. Originally, it was bright red. The seats may or may not be slats rather than cane-- I believe '43 was the first year the cane supply dried up, but perhaps this canoe was constructed early enough in the year that some cane was still available. The canoe was shipped to Manchester, NH, on July 5, 1943. Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

If you use the "search" function above on the right, you may find more information about canoes from "the war years" that might be of interest.

Kathy
