I am working on my 1910 OT CR double gunwale. It has been previously repaired. the filler is silver which I believe I have seen referred to as airplane dope. can this give an approximate date to the previous repairs? Thanks.

Many traditional fillers dry to a silver color, especially those which contain a significant amount of white lead so this probably can't help you date the previous repairs. White lead was phased out of most fillers in the 1960s if that helps. Sorry,

Thanks for the reply Benson.
This is not only silver coloured but shiny, looks like aluminum foil, is that what lead looks like?

No, I've not seen a shiny canoe filler like the glossy side of aluminum foil. They will frequently look like the dull side of aluminum foil though. I don't know what that might be.
