The Old Town with serial number 144841 is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Double End Boat model with open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, and a painter ring. It was built between April and June, 1946. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on April 10th, 1947 to Rome, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson

thanks Benson
Nothing look look mahogany to me. if the 8 is a 3 does it still come up a 16' double end?

That is clearly an 8 in the SN. It looks like you had the correct number on the first try.

The thwart in your photo is definitely mahogany and the rails and decks also appear to be.

The Old Town with serial number 144341 is a 17 foot Otca so that doesn't match. My guess is that this one is 144841 as MGC suggested.

are those usual in AA grade?

Yes, the Old Town database sample has 119 double end boats from 1906 to 1968 and 22 of these are listed as AA grade. The approach used at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/models.html produces an estimated total production of 1646 units or roughly 26 per year. The overall distribution of grades chart at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/grades.jpg shows 23% as AA grade which is slightly higher than the 18% identified above. Let me know if this doesn't answer your question.

I stand corrected and gladly so.
Andre, yes, new battens. Finally got them on before the siding rotted off. See you at assembly.
