Curious about Wooden Canoes
I am currently restoring a wood canvas Old Town Guide, serial # 210319 18. I'd love to know how old it is, and any other information on the boat. It is currently owned by YMCA Camp Menogyn. It was gifted to the camp some years ago by the then-owner.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 210319 is an 18 feet long Guide model equipped with a keel. It was built in 1975-76, receiving a final cleaning and inspection on November 3, 1976. The original exterior color was green. It was shipped on January 27, 1077 to Burnsville, Minnesota. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

Checking further, it seems that the canoe was damaged in shipment, returned for repairs on April 13, 1977, the broken bow was repaired, rebanded, and the canoe repainted on May 23, after which it was reshipped to Burnsville on June 1, 1978. It was then purchases by the YMCA Camp Menozin in Minneapolis on June 23, 1978. A copy of the back of the build record follows:

A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Hi Greg,

Thank you very much for the information. Your description matches the boat I'm working on very well. I'm surprised it came to Camp Menogyn so quickly after being built. It's been put to good use, carrying kids into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Quetico Provincial Park. Thanks again.
