Old Town Canoe no Serial #

Curious about Wooden Canoes
My Dad bought this canoe earlier this year and we are looking for some info on it. I have looked for a serial # but I think I will have to sand off the excess stain and varnish to find it. Any info on this would be appreciated.

I did look but I believe it will take some sanding and scraping to remove layers of varnish to view the #

Jack,
First try a couple of things. If you have a digital camera take some photos of the stems at different angles. Sometimes th camera picks up what the eye doesn't. Also you can shine a light at different angles and that may make it stand out.
good luck, Denis

Also try a little paint stripper, since you are going to re-finish anyway. Don't sand until you try everything else because it's really easy to sand out some of the details of the number.

There are a couple of interesting details about this boat that indicate it may have been restored. The seats appear to be hand woven cane, not pressed. That would date it prior to 1940 or so. The carry thwarts may have been special ordered or added later. That was not common on the Old Town Otca.

The metal tag instead of a decal and the Old Town decal on the side of the boat may indicate a later restoration. Benson or others may know when the tags and side decals first started showing up on boats.

I agree with Mike that this has been restored since several of the elements to not go together. The metal deck plates were not used until after 1979 as shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/covers/large-79.gif on the catalog cover. The white side decals are even more modern. Side decals were not used at all until the 1950s. The rounded Otca style decks were stopped in the late 1950s and the hand caned seats were not used after the late 1930s. The short carry thwarts in the ends also do not look original.

Let me also emphasize Mike's comment about sanding and serial numbers since it is very easy to permanently remove one if you are not careful. Let us know what you find.
