Old Town #111984

Hello,

Old Town 111984 is a 16 foot AA (top) grade Otca model canoe that was finished from January 1933 to January 1934. It has red Western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany seat frames and mahogany thwarts. It was fitted with a keel and a floor rack, painted dark green, and shipped to Johnston's Sport Shop in Champaign, IL, on June 13, 1934. It appears the canoe was originally slated to be an HW model but was shipped as an Otca. I can't make out what it says in the parentheses after Otca--- "[something] says"? One advantage of posting here is that others may be able to figure that out.

It would be interesting to know if your canoe has the traditional Old Town deck used on the HW model or the Otca deck. Examples of both are shown at www.dragonflycanoe.com/id/ if you scroll to "Old Town" on the left.

A copy of this record is posted below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Kathy
