Can you provide pictures of the serial numbers from each end? The records for both versions of these digits don't match the canoe in your pictures as shown below. There are no 17 foot long Otca models in the 5740x range either. Thanks,
Well of course I couldn't wait, so I just cleaned it down. Just my luck there is one character right where a screw went but it looks like MAYBE an "8" for a final of 17 57840? I'm going to work on the aft but I see there is a screw in a similar location. Stay tuned...
The Old Town canoe with serial number 57840 is a 16 foot long Charles River model so that doesn't seem like your canoe. My guess is that you have the one with serial number 57540. This is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Otca model with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, twenty inch maple decks, maple thwarts, maple seats, and a keel. It was built between November, 1919 and January, 1920. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on January 20th, 1920 to Allentown, Penna.
Scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to renew.
It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
