New-to-me canoes: 11' & 13' OldTown. Dating?

Wooden Canoe Maniac
I've just come back from Vermont where I picked up a 13 footer (ser # 170573-13) and an 11 footer (ser 128270-11). Both Old Town. My wife has dubbed the 11 footer 'Cutie Pie'. Ever see a cuter canoe? It's in just about perfect condition too - just needs a little attention to the wood & canvas.

Can someone provide me the web site used to date Old Town serial #s? I was told the 11 footer is from 1939...

The chart at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/oldtown_chart.html can give you some approximate dates for an Old Town serial number. The Old Town canoe with serial number 170573 is a 13 foot long fifty pound model with a keel. It was built between November and December, 1960. The original exterior paint color was bright red. It shipped on April 11th, 1961 to Haskell, New Jersey.

The one with serial number 128270 is an 11 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, fifty pound model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, and a keel. It was built between November 1939 and August, 1940. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on May 15th, 1941 to Sharon, Conn.

Scans showing these build records can be found by following the links at the thumbnail images attached below. These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue.
