You can post the number here and a volunteer will respond with any appropriate build records. It can also help if you supply the actual overall dimensions of the canoe and some pictures of the numbers from each end, outside profile side view, interior, and bow deck area. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help if the numbers are not clear.
The Old Town canoe with serial number 162884 is an 18 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Otca model with a keel, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between December, 1954 and October, 1955. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 20th, 1957 to Flint, Michigan. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.
This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to renew.
It is also possible that they could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. It would be great if you could post a picture of the name plate from the bow deck. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
