The Old Town and Kennebec canoes with serial number 17317 are both 16 feet long. My first guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 173177. This is a 15 foot long fifty pound model with a keel. It was built between June and July, 1963. The original exterior paint color was primarily red and similar to the image at
http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design37.gif which was known as design number 37. It shipped on July 31st, 1963 to Mitchell, Indiana.
My second guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 173174. This is a 15 foot long fifty pound model with a keel, mast seat, and a bang plate over the full length of the keel. It was built between June and July, 1963. The original exterior paint color was also a design number 37 as described above. It shipped on July 30th, 1963 to Winter Park, Florida. Scans showing both of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.
These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at
http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if these descriptions don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
