I need some help identifying this canoe it has the number 17317 stamped inside and it is 15 ft long.

Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
The serial number and appearance suggest that it could be a Chestnut Doe. Need more pictures, dimensions and are the outwale screws Robertson?

It appears the canoe was cover with red canvas.

Looks like an Old Town 15' 50# model. It had diamond-head bolts, dimensions, decks, screws and construction look right... But the serial number is probably missing a digit- the number you posted would put this canoe in the early teens, and if it is Old Town, it's not nearly that old.
The Old Town and Kennebec canoes with serial number 17317 are both 16 feet long. My first guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 173177. This is a 15 foot long fifty pound model with a keel. It was built between June and July, 1963. The original exterior paint color was primarily red and similar to the image at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design37.gif which was known as design number 37. It shipped on July 31st, 1963 to Mitchell, Indiana.
My second guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 173174. This is a 15 foot long fifty pound model with a keel, mast seat, and a bang plate over the full length of the keel. It was built between June and July, 1963. The original exterior paint color was also a design number 37 as described above. It shipped on July 30th, 1963 to Winter Park, Florida. Scans showing both of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.
These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Curious about Wooden Canoes
Thanks so much for the help, since I bought the canoe in Winter Park FL and it has the metal strip the whole length, I would think that is it. I will look closer at the ID number with a big magnifying glass.
