Need a mast ring for sail canoe...

Howie

I am so pissed at myself: I've misplaced the brass mast ring for a Thompson sail canoe I've been working on. Removed it a week ago to restore & varnish the seats. Now can't find the ring.

Any chance somebody has one to sell me?

Howie, I have complete faith you will find it right after you stop looking for it. You will find it in exactly the place you left it. I have a bad case of CRS and it kicks in all the time anymore!

I'm with Jim on this. Like many of us are, Howie is a packrat. It was not disposed of. That thing is sitting in some prominent spot where he placed it, 100% certain that it would be would "safe" and easily retrieved.
In other words, it's sitting in about the most unlikely spot possible, right under your nose.

I see lots of Thompson canoes, being in close proximity to Peshtigo. I’ve never seen one with a sail rig. Yours is likely a Cortland build.
Maybe the did more sailing canoes at that plant.
Keep looking. It’s there.
The other option is to check with Robert Ros$. He probably has a ring that would work.

for brass maybe you want answer to Dave ? I just think what tools did you need , generaly the removed item is near if you want to rebuilt faster and don't search another time the same tools ... the key for spark plug on the lawn mover jerrycan , the beer bottle opener in the fridge , the oyster knives in the car, in the diving bag and fishing box , the drill chuck key on a chain and some other on magnet on the drill corp ....

It's maddening. I remember unscrewing the 4 screws in the ring, I remember holding a screwdriver blade against the inside of the brass and tapping with a mallet to remove it. But I can't remember whether I did it at the canoe or in the basement. Can't find it in either location. Maddening!

If you cannot find it in a timely manner, you can get a local machine shop to make one for you. They are very simple pieces. Alternatively, find a nearby maker space and learn to do it yourself.

find the mallet and search around ..........and did you have a box for any pieces of a canoe , maybe you put it in a wrong
I dont say something , I search tools in all my little man cave under the house , there where in front of me on an hanged blister

As it happens, I have a retired machinist buddy I used to work with who has a small metal/wood shop in his basement who's just itching for a something to do. So I just bought a bar of brass from Amazon for under $22 that'll do the trick. No doubt I'll find the lost part someday...

Just got a call from the fella who owns the canoe. Turns out the canoe didn't come with the sail hardware! So I don't know what diameter to make the hole in the fixture! I'm guessing the mast is 1.5" dia. Can somebody please measure the internal diameter of the mast ring on their canoe? Or failing that, the diameter of the mast. To at least 2 decmal points. Thanks!

I don't know what diameter to make the hole in the fixture!

There are five mast rings on the Old Town canoes in my garage ranging from 1927 to 1958. They all appear to have about a two inch inside diameter. (I don't own a micrometer.) The factory notes at https://forums.wcha.org/attachments/1068/ indicate that the mast diameters ranged from one and 1/2 inches to one and 7/8 inches. Most of the ones in my garage are about one and 3/4 inches in diameter. Let me know if this and the picture below don't answer your question.
