It's Done

Canoe Builder
I bought this canoe at the 2009 Assembly auction. It was donated by Nancy Wightman of Cornish Flat, NH whose only request was she get some pictures of the finished canoe. I'll get those in the mail to her this week. It is a 1914 18' OT IF serial # 32733. The restoration involved new gunwales, tips of decks and stems, recane seats, 5 ribs and misc planking, canvas, paint, and varnish. The original canoe had all spruce gunwales but I thought mahogany outwales and caps would match the old wood better. Pete

I agree with Andre. What is that green? On the close up it looks very different then the longer shot of it.

The paint is Kirbys #38 Irish Green thinned 4-1 with Penetrol. As to the Assembly, it's a long way from west central Idaho. Maybe have it in the mid west some year? Pete

I rolled it on with a WEST epoxy roller cut in half, and tipped it off with a 3" foam brush. Pete

Wonderful looking canoe Pete. Did you make any attempt to tint the new boards to match? I've been debating whether to try to match our new planking and ribs. After seeing your boat, I am inclined to let the new wood glow while it can. I suspect it will blend in nicely in a few years. To me, the new stuff just adds some character to the appearance of a fine old canoe that has lots of history. (Our house looks the same way: every dent and stain has a story to tell.)

Thanks for all the positive feedback. Joe, I did stain the 5 white cedar ribs replaced under the front seat. I used minwax oil based stain I can get in 1/2 pints. I mix different colors until I get close on scraps of rib stock. Be sure to varnish the samples also as this changes the color. I did not stain the red cedar planking.
Steve this is the "Bear Claw" canoe. I've been working on it off and on between customers canoes. Following advice from this forum, I just lightly sanded the exterior planking after the woodwork was done, oiled and recanvased with #10 canvas. None of the scratches show through the finish. Pete
