Hi Rick,
Old Town serial numbers aren't split up in three groups like that-- it's usually 5-6 numbers with one space, followed by the canoe's length. I looked up 181398, which may be your canoe. Someone with the first name "Rick" who lives in New York contacted Old Town 6-1-1977. If that rings a bell, we know this is your canoe!
Old Town 181398 is a 16 foot Otca model. Nothing is noted about the grade. If it's trimmed in mahogany, it's AA grade... if it looks like something else, it's CS, or "common sense"... with decks, seats, and thwarts of ash or birch or another hardwood and rails possibly of spruce. Planking is cedar. Your canoe was fitted with a keel and painted dark green. It was half-built in August of 1968 but didn't leave the factory for Edinburg, NY, until May 28, 1970.
Copies of both scans are attached below. If you need larger copies, you may email me directly at

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at
