White cedar availability?

I searched the forum for sources of white cedar but didn't find anything recent. Clear White Cedar is quite scarce in Michigan these days. Where is everyone getting their stock for new builds?

There was a recent thread at http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?216610 in the Wooden Boat forum about some Atlantic White Cedar available in Albany, Vermont but the shipping to Michigan could be prohibitive. It is also worth keeping in mind that Atlantic White Cedar generally does not steam bend as well as Northern White Cedar (i.e. your breakage rate is likely to be much higher). Good luck,

Clear cedar is quite easy to find in Mi. The best place to start looking is the Amish mills. It takes a little work but it is well worth it.

You might also locate wood by using the builder and restorer guide to locate a supply. Many of the builders sell materials. They are not always super affordable but if you just need a bit of wood to make a few ribs or produce a few planks you may not care.

Gary Willoughby is right. I got mine, about 1100 bd feet several years ago. Amish sawyers. It's out there.

Thank you, all. I will search the mills since I do have a few Amish mills in the area but I am guessing north of me (I'm in the Sand Lake area) will yield more opportunities for cedar.

Thanks Paul. I live out side of Sand Lake which is 30 miles north of Grand Rapids. I also have a place near Traverse City which is closer to Glenn. I am hoping to build a new solo canoe but didn't want to start if I couldn't locate stock. I have the means of re-sawing and planing so 8' lumber is fine. www.condonlumber.com White Plains NY. Usually have great cedar. up to 8/4 thick and 16 feet long. Flinch sawn wide stuff. Call first before you go , they usually have a big pile. don't tell anyone. might be .net
