Views from the Stern and A Burgee on the Bow

My Wooden Canoe Journal arrived today and I like the new Views from the Stern idea. The postcard at http://www.ebay.com/itm/161560434472 indicates that some other Los Angeles neighborhoods had swimming pools big enough to paddle wooden canoes in them.

I also enjoyed Ken's article titled "A Burgee on the Bow" and would like to offer my list of canoes with burgee pole holders here.

The 1907 Charles River model at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?12320 had an unusual surface mount holder on the bow but I suspected that it wasn't original so removed it during the restoration. There are some pictures of it at http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=3942&d=1200017914 and http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=3943&d=1200017914 with some others.

The 1921 Molitor model at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?12325 has them on the bow and stern.

The 1922 Molitor model at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?4175 had them on the bow and stern but the stern one was lost during the restoration.

The 1927 Otca / Centerboard Sailing Canoe model at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?3994 has one on the bow.

I found it odd that only one pair of these flag pole sockets were mentioned on the build records. This total puts me at a bit more than one out of ten but my collection is probably not a representative sample. The pictures of a staff and socket at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?1150 may also interest you. I speculated there that someone with scuba gear could probably find lots of the flag pole staffs along the bottom of the Charles River and Belle Isle canals. Please keep us posted as your research progresses.
