Serial number Old Town 16712

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 16712 is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with red Western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, spruce outside finish rails, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between January and July, 1911. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 18th, 1911 to Lake Hopatcong Landing, New Jersey. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. The Carleton with this number is 16 feet long with open gunwales and long decks that shipped to Rochester, New York in 1922. The Kennebec is 16 feet long with open gunwales and short decks that shipped in 1923. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you for your prompt response. It is definitely the Old Town however the sponsons have been removed. Is there a drawing or plan that could diagram how the could be recreated? Are the keels on a 1910 and 1911 the same profile?

Sponsons are frequently left off when a canoe is recanvassed. I'm not aware of any diagram or plan showing how to recreate them. You can probably find and old canoe with sponsons to use as a model if you aren't in a hurry. The picture below shows the basic shape. The basic keel profile hasn't changed much over the years. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson

I am guessing that there is a forum participant who has a set of removed sponsons that might they be willing to part with.
You might try putting a request for sponsons for a 17 foot canoe in the forum classifieds. You might also start a thread. From my experience, once they are removed (and left off) they never get replaced.
