I retired from the classroom after 30 years, an with 2 sons out of college, i am ready, (i think), to take on the task of restoring this old town... It has been in the rafters of my barn for 30 years. When i bought it had been stored outside upside down on the ground and has damage (wood rot) to the stern and bow. Hope i can put her in the water by the time the kansas river ice thaws this spring....

The Old Town canoe with serial number 153136 is a 16 foot long Yankee model in CS (Common Sense or the middle) grade with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, and a keel. It was built between July and September, 1949. The original exterior paint color was brilliant green enamel. It was shipped on May 22nd, 1950 to Sioux City, Iowa. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that they could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson

Mr. Gray,
Thank you for your prompt reply. I was pleased to find she was railed on my 1st birthday... Having portaged a vintage Old Town on my first trip to the Boundry Waters, in 1965,
I think I will have to leave her here in the Flint Hills, as the portage trails in the B. W. seem a bit longer, a bit more rocky every trip... Thanks again.
