Old Town

The Old Town canoe with serial number 125598 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model that was shipped as a Carleton. This had open spruce rails, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between August, 1938 and February, 1939. The original exterior paint color was dark red. It shipped on August 2nd, 1939 to Wilson, Pennsylvania. but was damaged in transit and returned on August 26th, 1939. The planking was broken which required replacement and refinishing for $34.34 as shown on the back side of the card. It was then sold to Plainville, Connecticut on September 5th, 1939. Scans of both sides of this build record can be found below.

These scans were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Your life membership to the WCHA is much appreciated.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
