Old Town Sailing

Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
Of the several models that Old Town listed over the years was there one in particular that they felt was best suited for sailing? Length? Thanks.

The Old Town catalogs did not make a recommendation. Longer canoes were were usually preferred for sailing since they tended to be faster with 18 foot models being very common. The build record database described at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ indicates that about two percent of the total production as shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/options.jpg were shipped with sailing rigs. This is a bit small for accurate estimations but 46% of these were the HW model, 20% Otca, 8% Charles River, 7% Guide, 3% Fifty Pound, and the remaining 16% were scattered between ten other models. This distribution closely matches the general model distributions shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/models.jpg and http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/models.html as you might expect. Reply here if this doesn't answer your question,

Thank you

Thank you Dave and Benson,
I am not a big sailing kind of guy - I don't even own a sailing canoe, but it is an interesting aspect of the hobby that someday maybe I'll have to give a try. Jim C.
