Old Town #169078 18

The Old Town with serial number 169078 is a 12 foot sport boat. The serial number 169076 is also an 18 foot long Guide's model but it shipped to Oklahoma. My guess is that you have the one with serial number 169079. This has a keel and was built between June and July, 1959. The original exterior paint color was G. S. (Guide's Special) green. It shipped on September 18th, 1959 to Northeast Harbor, Maine. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

These scans were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

The #169079 you suggested is indeed the correct number. My number search was part of an inquiry to a "For Sale" ad for the canoe. The incorrect number was supplied by the owner. The correct number was evident on each stem when I inspected it for purchase. The canoe was within 15 miles of it's original destination in Northeast Harbor, Me. Having the info before my one hour drive to look at the canoe was invaluable. This is a great service to WCHA members....Thanks!

The canoe needs one rib, one piece of planking, inner and outer rails, re-caning of seats and a canvas for a pretty straight forward restoration (I hope). This will be my first attempt....wish me luck!
