Sorry to bother for another request within 24 hours of my original, however I was talking to my nephew who is restoring a 17 Ft Old Town who was told it was built in 1936 and originally purchased at Macys NYC. It appears the # is 08455 . I told him I would try to find out for him on this forum, nice to see someone from the younger generation taking an interest in restoring history. Thanks again, Kim Krum

Welcome back, the serial numbers in Old Town canoes don't usually start with a leading zero so my guess is that this is actually the Old Town canoe with serial number 108455. It is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Otca model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, twenty inch mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was built between December, 1930 and February, 1931. The original exterior paint color was burnt orange. It shipped on March 30th, 1931 to Macy's in Long Island City, New York. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you or your nephew will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The information at https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/791/ may help if the numbers are hard to read. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much for your quick reply, I forwarded this valuable information onto my nephew. Yes he said he thought it was a scratch but that there is a 1 before 08455. He is thrilled that you were able to provide this information on his canoe. Thanks again and most definitely will make a donation to WCHA. . Kim Krum
