Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
Anyone know where I can find 1/2" Brass Stems with Concave Backs? I found one place with 1/2", but they are flat back. Should i go with flat back or is concave better?

Hi,

It would depend what you're putting it on.

The Willits canoe with outside stems used a 1/2" flat back stem band, and it should work well on any canoe with an outside stem, but not so much if you're putting it over the canvased stem of a canoe.

What are you putting it on?

Fixing up an old Stowe Mansfield - about 40 years old.
Stems were shot - I decided not to replace them so the Brass stem will be put directly on the shell. Wood stems on interior are fine and structurally it is very sound.
Any advantage to concave as opposed to flat?

The flat back won't sit well on the rounded face of a typical canoe end. Outside stems as Paul mentioned, give you a flat face to work with. A flat stem band will gap on a canoe without outside stems. Even a concave stem band will gap to a degree depending on how fair the profile and filling is but not nearly as much as the flat variety.
