Curious about Wooden Canoes
I bought a 1930 Old Town Guide Canoe which need some restoration work and I'm wondering if it was originally a sailing canoe when it was purchased. The past owner had the original receipt which I have attached does grade indicate that?? The reason why I'm wondering is that the front seat with the mast hole has the type of cane that you press in place (looks newer) and the back seat looks original and has the holes for caning. Any help would be appreciated.

No, the CS (Common Sense or middle) grade indication on the build record for your canoe does not include a sail rig. See http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?14681 for more information about the Old Town grades. Factory installed sail rigs are usually identified with notes on the bottom of the build record as the examples at http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=36810&d=1493928266 and http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=36667&d=1492257842 show. Your canoe appears to have had the sail rig installed at least a decade after it left the factory. See http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?4107 for more information about dating Old Town sail rigs. Let me know if this doesn't answer your question. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson

That is what I was thinking, but the writing was a bit hard to decipher and I wanted to be sure. Thanks for the information it was helpful on how I want to move along on the restoration. Anyway if anyone is looking for a mast, sail rig (without sail), seat with mast hole (needs to be caned), and the canoe attachments for a rudder let me know. I would imagine shipping is a killer on the mast. I would also be willing to do a partial trade if you have a seat that would be similar to the one in the picture above (front is 24" long and back 26 1/2" long).
