Swimming With Canoes

There's a short chapter in John McPhee's latest book, Silk Parachute, entitled Swimming With Canoes. It was reprinted awhile back in Sierra magazine, if I recall correctly. It starts out "I grew up in a summer camp - Keewaydin - whose specialty was canoes and canoe travel. At the home base, near Middlebury, Vermont, were racks and racks of canoes - E.M. Whites and Chestnuts, mainly. They were very good wood-and-canvas keeled or keelless canoes, lake or river canoes..."

For this story alone, it's worthwhile to check out the book, even though that's the only reference to canoes in it I've come across so far.
