I have an old towm canoe marked 131992 18. How can I find out details about when it was built, what options it came with, color ect? It appears to have been set up for sailing and is currently red.

Old Town 131992 is an 18 foot AA (top) grade HW model canoe that was completed from March through June of 1941. It has open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, thwarts, and seat frames, a keel, sponsons, and a floor rack. The original color scheme was design #37--- I can post a picture of that when I retrieve my catalog disks from the car. Your canoe was shipped to Roscommon, Michigan, on [can't make it out] 1941. (Maybe someone else can decipher the smudges.)

No mention on the record of a sail rig, but it could have been added later. The HW model was commonly used as a sailing canoe, and sponsons gave it greater stability. The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Kathy
