My wife and I were gifted today with a beautiful 16' O.T.C. Serial #140410. Still has original backrest and two paddles. It was modified, I've been told, with a detachable rudder and adapter for a outboard motor. To view the build card wiil be great. Thanks.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 140410 is 16 feet long, AA grade, Otca model with western cedar planking, open ash gunwales, ash seats, decks and thwarts, and was equipped with a keel and floor rack. The keel and floor rack were installed on Septebmer 20, 1944 and finishing was completed on September 25, 1944. An AA grade canoe was typically finished with mahogany rather than the ash used in this canoe, undoubtedly because of wartime unavailability of some materials. The original exterior paint color was bright red, with a guide special green bottom. It was shipped to Marion, Ohio on October 6, 1944. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

It was not equipped at the factory with a rudder or motor mount, nor were paddles and backrest shipped with it from the factory; such items were often added by the dealer or by the owner.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
