serial number search

The build record for the Old Town canoe with serial number 16744 appears to be missing so I'll assume that you have number 116744. This is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Otca model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, 20 inch oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seats, half ribs, and a keel. It was built between December, 1935 and March, 1936. The original exterior paint color was Yale blue. It shipped on March 17th, 1936 to New York city. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Howdy,

I'll begin with Old Town 116744: it is a 17 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade Otca model canoe completed December 1935 to March of 1936, with open spruce gunwales, 20" oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seat frames with hand caning, and a keel. Originally it was painted Yale blue. It was shipped to Abercrombie and Fitch in NTC on March 17, 1936 (a St. Paddy's day gift, perhaps?).

Old Town 16744 is filed out of sequence-- I can hunt it down, but it would be a canoe dating to 1911 and would possibly have closed gunwales and wouldn't have diamond head bolts holding the thwarts and seat frames. If the other canoe appears to fit, it may be your baby. Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.
